Dental Emergencies: What Are They and How Can Kings Avenue Dental Clinic Help?
Dental emergencies can strike at any time, causing pain, discomfort, and anxiety. Being prepared and knowing what to do can help minimise damage and get you the care you need as quickly as possible.
What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any sudden dental problem that requires prompt professional attention to prevent serious complications. Here are some signs that you might be experiencing a dental emergency:
- • Severe pain, including toothache: This could be a throbbing pain, sharp pain, or constant dull ache that interferes with your daily activities and sleep.
- • Uncontrollable bleeding: If you experience bleeding in your mouth that you cannot stop with pressure, it’s a dental emergency.
- • Knocked-out tooth: A tooth that has been completely knocked out of its socket is a dental emergency.
- • Severely cracked teeth: Cracked teeth can cause significant pain and discomfort, and depending on the severity, may require immediate attention.
- • Swelling of the face and/or jaw: Swelling in your face or jaw can be a sign of an infection and requires prompt dental care.
- • A deep cut in the mouth: A deep cut in your mouth, especially if it involves a lot of bleeding or affects your ability to speak or eat, is a dental emergency.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
While the following tips can help manage discomfort until you see a dentist, they are not substitutes for professional care:
- • Severe pain: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or paracetamol.
- • Uncontrollable bleeding: Apply gentle pressure to the bleeding area with a clean cloth or gauze pad for 10-15 minutes.
- • Knocked-out tooth: If possible, gently try to put the tooth back in its socket. If unable, hold the tooth by the crown (the top part) and store it in milk or saline solution. See a dentist within 60 minutes to increase the chances of saving the tooth.
- • Severely cracked teeth: Apply a cold compress to your face to reduce swelling and take over-the-counter pain medication. If the tooth is sharp, cover the sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free chewing gum to prevent cutting your tongue or cheek.
- • Swelling of the face: Apply a cold compress to the swollen area for 10-15 minutes at a time. Take over-the-counter pain medication and eat soft foods on the unaffected side of your mouth.
- • Deep cut in the mouth: Apply gentle pressure to the bleeding area with a clean cloth or gauze pad for 10-15 minutes. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
